Garden help?

Joaquin Dronko: As long as your brother is playing football back there, it will never grow. But if you want green, you might consider getting artificial turf: If nothing else, it will control the mud.Good luck!

Jammie Taddei: Well this wouldn't be the time of year to plant grass. The state you are in would be a necessity for an answer. In the spring would be the time to either seed with a good grass seed or sod the yard.

Debora Rinderer: Don't grow grass and your brother will have to go to the park to play football. ( That's a win/win) There are many native plants the are more sustainable and less detrimental to the environment. Go sustainable and you will not need supplemental watering, fertilizers or polluting mowers.

Ollie Hamiel: Soil has three basic components: clay, sand and organic matter. If your soil is mostly muddy when it's wet and hard and cracked when it's dry, you have a clay soil. Grass, or just about anything else, won't take root there! easily until you add some of the other two ingredients, sand and organic matter (such as compost and peat moss). If you plan to buy sod, it does come with a thin layer of soil in which it grew, but that is likely not enough to sustain your new (and expensive) sod for the long term. Look at adding sand and compost to the top few inches of your existing soil, then consider seeding it with your favourite grass seed or purchasing sod.As mentioned by an earlier answerer, some varieties of lawn cover need less maintenance than others. Clover, for instance will never need to be mowed, and will have pretty white or red flowers on it depending on the variety.Hope this helps!...Show more
