Jacinta Moitoso: Voters are interviewed as they leave the voting place. It gives pollsters a sense of not just who is winning in an election but who is supporting a candidate and why. Sometimes they will do entrance polls, questioning people before they vote.
Jude Colbenson: The previous answerers gave good definitions of exit polls. I'd further note that exit polls are known to be amongst the most accurate types of polls there are.

Curt Broadhead: The law prevents anyone from campaigning in any way shape or form outside a polling area within a certain radius. But it doesn't prevent pollster from asking people who they voted for as they walk out. People don't have to answer but it give the pollsters some idea of how the voting is going before the results are in.
