Sammie Bocanegra: The registered owner of the vehicle must carry the insurance. You can get a non-owners policy that insures you as a driver. Check with an insurance agent in your state to get the specific details.
Randolph Lozoya: If the car is only purchased in a name other than yours that person in most states must also be on the insurance. The advise you have gotten to put your mom on the car insurance as a driver is true only if she is the primary driver. If you are listed as the primary driver it won't help your insurance rates. What we did when I got my car is my mom was listed as the primary driver even though she hardly if ever drove my car but it took the rates way down. I was listed as a secondary driver so I was insured on the car. It worked out fine....Show more

I am getting new Mazda3 next week. I am 19 years old male (my dad is paying for car). My mom will pay for my insurance (full coverage). The problem is, my mom and my stepdad are divorced, but she is driving car he bought and she is paying him for that car, so she is under his All-State insurance. Now I need insurance and what to do? We obviously donât want to put my name under my stepdadâs insurance. Someone said to my mom that she should get new insurance (for example Progressive) for my car under her name, and then put me on her insurance, though she would never drive Mazda3, because I go to college in different town. The person said this way we would not pay as much as if Iâd open insurance under my name. Now and adv! ices. Thank youOh and another question. If, let's say, car is ! bought under my momâs name, can I get individual insurance under my name? Joeann Hoyt: The insurance needs to be in the name of the registered owner. Probably the cheapest way to go would be to put the car & yourself under your stepdad's insurance - since their rates are cheaper to begin with. The next best thing would be for your mom to check around for rates, insure the car in her name w/you as an active driver on the policy. Because of your age & the vehicle, the rates are going to be high anyway, but this would be the least expensive. I would also try GEICO as well as Progressive - they both have good ratings in the insurance industry & are well respected..! ..Show more
Wilfred Santacruce: the car owner has to show on the insurance since if in an accident, the insurance company pays the owner for repairs and/or for the value of the auto if totaled; it is important that the policy shows where the car is "garaged"; so if your step dads policy shows the auto your mother is driving is parked at his residence rather than your mothers since they are divorced, could be a problem; rates are dependent on where you live with most policies; usually most companies dont care who pays for the insurance, but need to know who is driving the auto; the drivers determine the rates to be charged; but since you are going to college, you need to notify them of this due to different town; they may rate the car different when you are at school and at home; my daughter when she was 16 had her own car i bought for her; we had 2 policies; 1 for myself and 1 for her; i was the registered owner for both on each policy; you cant get a now-own! ers policy since that applys to not owning a car, which you wont, but a! non owner applys to when someone does not have access to a vehicle on a regular basis, which you will; call any insurance agent in the phone book or look in the internet for one; call and ask the questions and quotes; explain the situation and they will tell you what will work and what won't. take notes; then call 2 or 3 more; once you get the best rates, go with that company; good luck...Show more

Cyndy Grimes: if the car is registered in your name, the policy must be in your name. you cannot get non owners insurance if you live in a home where you have access to a vehicle, so don't try that. the best thing to do is to take out a policy in your own name, or have your mom change companies, and then put you and your auto on her policy, that way you get a multi car discount, which will help a little. no matter how you look at it, you are buying a new car a! nd you are young and will be rated on that car, so its gonna be costly. since you're 19, if you got your license at 16 it won't be as bad as you are not considered an inexperienced operator anymore....Show more
