what chocolate brand is good for vegans?

Tana Dumoulin: I looooove Endangered Species Chocolates. They are vegan (most of them), Fair Trade Certified (no slaves or unfair wages) and each bar has a specific endangered animal that the proceeds go to. Plus they taste awesome. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Mint.Go Max Go vegan candy bars are great too. They have an Almond Joy knock-off called Mahalos that are amazing....Show more

Damion Oleksa: The brand is called "Enjoy Life" and its called "boom CHOCO boom"it is delicious and is better than Hershey's chocolate, and if you gave it to a non-vegan without telling them (just an example) they would not know the difference, i'm not exaggerating ether :)

Cornelius Thornborrow: Equal Exchange chocolate is just amazing. Expensive but amazing. It's also fair trade. And in response to another answer, I'm vegan but really...omg... if you are going to rule out a food because an insect may have crawled across it and died, you aren't ever gonna eat anything.Edit:! I'd like to see your source for insect fermentation of cacao because I've just read several websites and no where do any of the processes outline insects as being a part of the fermentation process....Show more

Jed Mutone: Her in Oz we have Cocolo & Farm By Nature both vegan dark delicious and fair trade / organic! I think being a vegan also means respecting human rights and buying only fair trade / organic chocolate -(thanks Kat). I know their are plenty in the UK & USA - Green & Blacks is now owned by Cadbury and now all have milk products!oh yeah , try this for a treat - 1 Medjool Date, 1 Cacao Bean & 1 Almond -pip the date, chuck the other two in and enjoy!! cheers...Show more

Barton Slisz: 100% Guilt Free 50% Cacao Dark Chocolate .

Maria Bengston: Mmmmmm chocolate...Soo many choices. Sweet Earth Chocolates make yummmy turtles and pb cupsRose City Chocolates make yummy chocolate boxes (and their pb truffle things are so very good too!)I always found T! ropical Source a little odd, but they've been around forever a! nd are one of the only ones who make a crispy bar.Very expensive, but wowww...The new Rescue Chocolate barsImagine came out with Chocolate Dream bars...personally, I think they're nothing special. But they're vegan, so that's something :)The new Divvies - meh. They're ok..Not bad..nothing to write home about. (Their sweet & sour stars though are the perfect combo (and I usually only like the sweet part of the equation :) )Sjaak's are ok..Their boxed nuts & chews are great if you miss caramelsGo Max Go candy bars - mmmmmmmmTree Huggin TreatsTerra Nostra - Yum. They have a rice milk one, truffle, raisins & pecans, etc...mmmmChocolove makes a few, but I've heard mixed reviews on their fair trade standards/where they source their chocolateEndangered Species are quite good.Theo Chocolate..Equal Exchange..Whizzers - if you miss m&ms. Or they make speckled eggs - great around Easter if you miss those Cadbury speckled egg things. And speaking of missing - Smores - Sweet & Sara (Or, ! if you used to love Girl Scout PB Tagalong cookies - try Lovely Liz's Lovely PB Oh's. They're quite expensive, but if you put them in the fridge and eat them slowly, it's worth it! ) But I digress...In other words, yes, I am a chocolate fiend. And thankfully, there are many, many options out there! ---I have to agree with wyllow on this insect subject. Fig wasps pollinate figs and if you're eating a fig, you conceivably are eating a wasp...Rats get stuck in grain elevators...I could go on, but the point I'm getting at is that we can't be perfect. If it is something where the creature is intentionally made into food such as cochineal beetles, that's one thing. But when we start getting into everything that may have an unintentional bug in it...we would have to be true Level 5 vegans (for about 3 days until we kicked it). And if we push perfection, we risk turning many away from ever considering veg*nism - which in turn defeats the goal of helping as many creatures as possibl! e....Show more

Verena Koop: Just so you know, chocolate (even if ! it doesn't contain dairy) sometimes contains insects. Chocolate is a fermented product. The cacao beans are picked and then put into large, open, outdoor fermentation boxes. The yeasts that ferments the beans arrives to the chocolate via insects that crawl through the beans. Invariable, some insects get trapped and die there. There are minuscule amounts of insects parts in chocolate (even after processing and filtering). Insects belong to the animal kingdom (i.e. vegans don't eat honey that was produced by insects).Sugar is also sometimes not vegan. Sugar made from sugar cane is often filtered using bone-char (charcoal made from animal bones). The only true vegan sugar is beet sugar, which doesn't need this filtering process. Bags of granulated sugar made from cane sugar does not list on the ingredient label if bone-char was used or not. Beet sugar can be purchased at most grocery stores for home use... and it is 100% vegan. Plus, the chocolate companies will no! t list the source of sugar on their product label.Edit: I'm not saying thats it not vegan because an insect walked across the cacao beans and died. I'm saying its not vegan because insects were used in the fermentation process of the chocolate, similar to the way that bees are used to make honey. Honey wouldn't exist without bees the same way that the cacao beans couldn't be made into chocolate with the help of insects. And what about sugar made with bone-char? Should vegans be able to consume it?...Show more
