Dawn Saha: To make it easier for children, those who teach them should avoid using slang, idioms, and long words, try to see the situation from a child's point of view, and, to start with, get children to try to read short, simple pieces of writing such as nursery rhymes or poems, rather than whole books.i disagree. the strategy you've just mentioned is more for teenagers or adults learning a foreign language. kids are like sponges. they take in everything and organize it automatically rather than having to deal with it on a manual linear, concept by concept, basis which is more logical but more difficult.an example of this would be the use of phrasal verbs. most native english speakers don't know what they are because we've al! ways used them and they seem normal. for ESL students phrasal verbs are the abyss.what does "to take off" mean? i take OFF my hat.the plane takes OFF.take your feet OFF the table.he took the day OFF.ESL children don't have to write tables to memorize the various meanings and usage, they just repeat it a million times in songs and games and know it. for a child speaking their native language, this goes even faster so i think you should expose the children to a wide spectrum of language that is non-linear rather than a limited range.English is not as simple as it appears to be become it is a complicated mixture of several European languages, such as- Greek, Latin, French, German, English etc. Thus it possesses approximately ten lack words.English is not extremely hard to start learning, but hard to perfect.Learning the idioms and intricacies may not occur with a first generation English language learner.
